More like this. Watch options. Storyline Edit. Chronicles the experiences of a formerly successful banker as a prisoner in the gloomy jailhouse of Shawshank after being found guilty of a crime he did not commit. The film portrays the man's unique way of dealing with his new, torturous life; along the way he befriends a number of fellow prisoners, most notably a wise long-term inmate named Red.

Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free. Rated R for language and prison violence. Did you know Edit. Trivia Andy and Red's opening chat in the prison yard, in which Red is throwing a baseball, took nine hours to shoot. Morgan Freeman threw the baseball for the entire nine hours without a word of complaint. He showed up for work the next day with his left arm in a sling.

Quotes Andy Dufresne : [to Red] I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Crazy credits The man who cried and was beaten when Andy first arrived is listed and credited as "Fat Ass" -- the other inmates' nickname for him.

Hope, endurance, and unconditional friendship are core themes of the film. Corruption, manipulation, and betrayal are also present, but they're shown to fail in the end. The problem of "institutionalization" is shown and discussed -- a prison inmate has spent so much time in prison, he has forgotten how to live outside the prison walls.

Integrity and perseverance are major themes. Andy never gives up hope. Red is loyal and practical. All the characters are flawed, but it's clear who the "good" and "bad" guys are, even though their positions might not suggest that from the start. Inmates work together, often illegally, to make life more bearable. The warden is corrupt and takes bribes, but it's shown in a negative light. A man commits suicide by hanging. A man is shot and killed by another man with a rifle.

Prison rape, while not graphically shown, is very strongly implied, with references to oral and anal sex and the takeaway that one of the lead characters was raped repeatedly by other prisoners.

Sex is portrayed obliquely at the beginning. Lots of cheesecake photos of sex symbols from the s and '60s decorate the prison walls. Frequent profanity, including "f--k. A man is shown sitting in his car drinking whiskey from a flask before stumbling out to, presumably, murder his wife and her lover.

Cigarette smoking. Inmates drink beer after Andy wins a bet with the captain of the prison guards. Parents need to know that The Shawshank Redemption is an Oscar-nominated movie based on a Stephen King story about a man sent to a maximum security prison in Maine in the s who shows the other inmates perseverance and provides a sense of hope and optimism in the bleakest of places and under the most difficult of circumstances.

The gritty world of Shawshank Prison is populated with sadistic guards, a corrupt warden, and predatory fellow inmates. Prison rape, while not graphically shown, is very strongly implied, with references and body positions suggesting forced anal and oral sex. Guards beat and kill an inmate. A prisoner is shot and killed by a man with a rifle. There is also a scene in which a character crawls through yards of a sewer pipe filled with excrement. There is also frequent profanity, including "f--k" and its variations.

However, the film also shows inmates forming a loving community of friendship and support despite oppressive conditions and a sense of maintaining perseverance and hope in the darkest of hours. Add your rating See all 40 parent reviews.

But things unravel. In doing the books for the warden, he learns that the prison boss is taking bribes, and Andy is to launder them. A lovable former inmate hangs himself when he gets to the outside but can't adjust after decades behind bars. The inmate whom Andy helps get his GED is shot by the guards to keep him quiet about information that might prove Andy is innocent of the murders and set him free. Andy spends two months in solitary. After he gets out, he seems depressed and Red worries he'll kill himself.

The next day, Andy isn't dead, but he isn't there, either -- he's escaped. The rest is a perfect Stephen King happy ending, complete with comeuppance for the corrupt warden. This is a movie that stands the test of time and still resonates with viewers. Call this the Stand by Me of prison stories.

Here we have all the things that made Stand by Me such a satisfying experience: loveable characters, writerly flourishes, one-dimensional evil antagonists, enduring friendships, poetic justice, and a happy ending. This one is far darker and far more violent than Stand by Me and so ought to be reserved only for older teens. The story is slow to develop, and younger kids and children sensitive to the suffering of others may find this world a difficult one to sit with for the film's duration.

Having said all that, the film is satisfying but cloying. Andy is the minister of the healing power of hope. Helped me decide 1. Adult Written by Prashast S.

May 19, A timeless masterpiece. A heart wrenching drama. An epic tale of true friendship. I had never heard about this film before. It was just one day while I was searching my local DVD store this year that I found a brand new, special two-disc collector's edition.

The title attracted me, and as I browsed the internet before buying the disc, I was blown away by the response the film had got. I instantly brought the DVD, but sadly couldn't watch it for long. Today, I finally decided to watch it, and by the time it ended, all I had was the happiness of watching a heart wrenching drama and a smile on my face.

It's a very old film, but no matter how many times you watch it, you're gonna love it. This is a very emotional and inspiring prison drama which is worth watching by one and all despite of its content rating. Not only has the film been written and directed masterfully by Frank Darabont, it also has stellar performances coming from Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. Believe me, the two make the best buddies I've ever seen in a film till date.

SR is a pure drama with some crime element thrown in. But it doesn't fail to impress and entertain you, and even surprises you before the time it ends. It makes sure that you get inspired and moved by the message it delivers with perfection. Another great thing: it has no romance to hinder the story. It's a heartwarming, effective and unforgettable character drama which makes you unable to get from your seat till the very end. Some think it's overrated, but honestly, it isn't.

After all, this is a film which anyone who likes movies, especially dramas, can very easily appreciate. I just liked to see Tim and Morgan in a frame, because whenever they come together, there's something wonderful going to happen. The dialogues are brilliantly written: there are a lot of lines bound to be remembered forever. Technically too, the film shines. A film set within a prison could've been devoid of any visual excellence but the cinematographer has totally nailed it, providing us with the clear vision of what the director wanted us to see.

Through this entire duration of minutes, I felt a different range of emotions from sadness to happiness to even anger at times. It's that powerful. Saying anything more would sound like an understatement.

Many others have already praised the film in their respective reviews, and I totally appreciate that. It's sad that such a great film wasn't a commercial success. But its real success lies in being the most memorable drama of all time. I really feel happy and lucky for having brought the DVD. Adult Written by Atif A. May 13, Epic Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins stand like poets, and they just enchant us with their beautiful story and poetry! Yes, now after watching the movie, you know or remember again- hope is the best of all things, and when you hope, you know the meaning of life.

But I thought in such a movie, those a bit of sex at the beginning was not necessary! Amazing I would give this movie 4 stars, because it was absolutely stunning to watch. I love how the story plays out from an innocent man who sooner becomes the intelligent one at the end. This movie really shows the inside and lifestyle of any prisoner in that situation. It was amazing how prisoners take each other one at a time to be apart of their "squad". By watching it, it looks like it takes forever becoming as the ugly duck into being the top dog in the prison.

I love how the prisoners would tease and say "we're all innocent" as a joke but in reality they know they did it. The movie was great to watch as Andy was smart enough to plan out everything and in the end screw over the people who screwed him.

It's a pretty good pay back movie that in the end shows how it was all done. Then how you shouldn't mistreat someone who done so much for you and be thankful with the ones you met on the way. This title contains: Positive role models.
