By Christine Hill Learn how to protect yourself in the event of an Ozone Alert, and how you can help reduce ozone pollution everyday. Since ozone concentrations are lowest at the coolest times of the day, exercise before 10 a. Try to keep outdoor activity to a minimum.
It is important to stay in a building with a good air-filtration system. If your home does not have air conditioning, visit a library or community center. Visit www. An additional second gas-cap test can determine if your gas cap has a leak. A leaky gas cap can waste up to a gallon of gas in two weeks, and contribute to compromised air quality.
Slow down when you drive. Speeding lowers gas mileage by 5 percent while driving in the city and 33 percent on the highway. Sudden breaking or acceleration also uses more fuel.
Consider using public transit, biking or walking which all help reduce regional air pollution by reducing the amount of vehicles on the road, and in turn, the amount of ozone in the air. Encourage flextime to reduce peak hour roadway congestion. If available, subsidize and sell employee transit passes at the office. Buy a bike rack for your employees, and encourage them to use it, or allow employees to keep their bicycles safely indoors.
Encourage brown bagging it on Air Quality Action Days. Provide free sodas, or coffee and donuts, to employees who make an extra effort. Organize deliveries from popular local restaurants. Create a special lunch discount in the cafeteria to encourage lunch on site. Fleet Maintenance Activities Delay refueling vehicles and equipment until late afternoon or the next day.
Schedule deliveries from your site together to eliminate multiple trips. Turn off vehicles when loading or unloading for more than 30 seconds. People with concerns about how air pollution affects their health should contact their doctor. When you pump gasoline into your car tank or a gas can, some escapes as fumes.
On hot summer days, these emissions can react with sunlight and heat to form ground level ozone. Someday, hopefully soon, we may see our energy grid powered completely by renewable energies like wind and solar. Letting your car idle for longer 10 seconds releases more emissions than simply restarting. Avoid heavy traffic times, drive-thru lanes, and any other idling on Action Days. The restrictions will be enforced through local ordinances or a state regulation.
The state regulation applies to any community in the seven-county Denver-Boulder metropolitan area that did not have its own mandatory residential burning ordinance in effect on January 1, Under this regulation, the only exceptions to the residential burning restrictions are for residences above 7, feet in the seven-county Denver-Boulder metropolitan area; and those who use Colorado Phase III Phase II EPA certified woodburning stoves, Colorado approved pellet stoves, approved masonry heaters or those whose stoves or fireplaces are their primary source of heat.
For more information on residential burning restrictions, call the Air Pollution Control Division at For an AQI value that considers all pollutants, please click here. Ground-level ozone is a summertime air pollution problem that is created when other pollutants from sources like vehicle exhaust, paints, degreasing agents and cleaning fluids react with sunlight.
Exposure to ground-level ozone can cause acute respiratory problems, reduced lung capacity and inflammation of lung tissues and can trigger asthma attacks. Ground-level ozone should not be confused with the protective stratospheric ozone layer miles above the Earth's surface. This naturally-occuring ozone layer protects the Earth's surface from excessive ultra-violet radiation. Do your share and be a part of the solution to the Denver-metropolitan area's summertime air pollution problems.
